Rethinking poverty measures through diets
A new study argues that the World Bank’s $2.15 poverty line drastically underestimates global poverty because it measures survival calories rather than access to a nutritious diet. By introducing a Healthy Diet Poverty Line, researchers show that up to 2.9 billion people cannot afford balanced meals, reshaping how poverty and human well-being should be defined.
