Researchers at the University of British Columbia have discovered that offering a small chance at a larger payout, rather than a guaranteed refund, can significantly increase beverage container recycling rates. By introducing a 'recycling lottery,' participants showed a preference for risk, reported higher levels of excitement, and brought in a significantly greater number of bottles, suggesting a promising, low-cost approach to improving recycling rates and reducing environmental impact.
